VW Santa run to Southampton Children’s Hospital

More than 150 Volkswagen vehicles arrived at Southampton Children’s Hospital for their sixth annual VW Santa Run on Sunday (2 December).

The event had both classic and custom VWs participating in the Santa Run; from split-screens, Beetles, buggies, Golf’s and caddies to T4s and T5s, and started from Beaulieu Motor Museum.

They donated toys and craft items to Southampton Children's Hospital, with the bulk being donated to the Piam Brown ward - the Wessex regional cancer unit for children under 16.

Charity coordinator Rachel Funnell, from Southampton Hospital Charity, said: “It is always such a fantastic sight to see classic and custom Volkswagen vehicles arrive at the hospital bringing gifts for our children on the Piam Brown ward and other areas of the children's hospital. We thank everyone involved for supporting all the children we care for.

"This is the sixth year this lovely event has happened and it is incredible to see over 150 VW cars and vans getting involved this Christmas, donating over nine cages worth of presents. This really does the brighten the children's day, and  being able to give a present to all of the children in hospital over Christmas will make a massive difference to their stay.”

Phill Ashby, event organiser, said: "I am always overwhelmed by the support this attracts from the VW community each year as so many of them really want to get involved and bring the children a bit of Christmas cheer. This really is a worthy cause. When I started this event six years ago we had 48 VW vehicles, so have grown this much in a few years is amazing."

Phil, a reserve at 106 Regiment of the Royal Artillery, added:  "Beaulieu are also amazingly generous, as are my unit the 106 Regiment, who help do the marshalling at Beaulieu, as well as my friends with their bikes who marshal the route for us. Everyone involved loves being able to do something for the young people at this time of year."
