Lottery profits subsidise heart conference

Every year, profits from our lottery mean we can offer grants to staff to benefit our patients. Last week we were able to offer subsidised places to staff in the Specialist Nurses 11th annual adult congenital heart conference.

Lynda Tellett, Clinical Specialist Nurse, comments: “The aim of this conference was to network and nurture staff whilst educating them about our patient’s needs and their complex heart conditions.

“It was a fantastic day demonstrating the different types of complex heart conditions patients can be born with. The audience learnt what implications this has on an individual’s life and what it is like to live with a congenital heart condition. For some of our patients this may require subsequent management of heart failure in young adults, as well as how we can improve the transition from the paediatric care to the adult service.

“By being able to offer a reduced rate, it enticed 40 staff to attend, all of whom had a special interest in caring for this group of patients. In turn they can pass on what they learnt to their work colleagues and thus improving and optimising patients care. Without the Southampton Hospital Charity lottery grant money, the numbers of staff on the course would not be possible.”
