Active Nation helps to bring January joy to children in Southampton Hospital
Southampton Disney Store partners with Active Nation and the Rose Road Association to donate soft toys.
In October last year Disney Store launched its annual ‘Share in the Magic’ charity campaign, which encouraged guests to write a letter to Santa and post either in-store or online at disneystore.co.uk. For each letter received, Disney Store donated a soft toy to a local charity in the UK.
Active Nation and the Rose Road Association were the charities nominated in 2013 by Disney Store Southampton. On Monday 27th January, members from Active Nation visited the children’s wards at Southampton General Hospital to present the plush that had been donated by Disney Store.
Active Nation are a national sport and exercise charity who manage local sport and leisure facilities in Southampton and The Rose Road Association has been providing high quality services for disabled children and young people across Hampshire and surrounding counties since 1952.
One of the children lucky enough the receive a Duffy Bear (Mickey Mouse’s teddy bear) was four year old Cameron Holder who had a kidney transplant in February 2013. Mum Donna Holder said: “It is really nice for the kids that people like this give up their time to come into the hospital and donate the toys. Some of the children have been in for a long time and visits like this really cheer them up. You’d never imagine that you’d get something like this from going into hospital - it has been a real treat for Cameron.”
Mark Learnihan, Contract Manager for Active Nation said: “We were delighted to be part of this wonderful campaign from Disney. We have a fantastic relationship with the staff working at the Disney Store and prior to Christmas we encouraged our supporters to help with the donation.”
“The donated plush we received have given comfort to children in hospital who myself and managers from Active Nation were able to visit. Spending time with the brave young children and their families has been a very humbling experience for us all and one that will stay with us for a very long time.”
Accompanying the managers from Active Nation today was ‘Captain Quays’, the official mascot of The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, who had his own ‘Duffy Bear’ which he carried around with him.
