Putting their best foot forward

A group of 20 staff from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust will take on the Yorkshire three peaks challenge for their patients.

Lindsay Hawkins, Sister, comments: “The cardiac intensive care unit looks after people who are seriously ill with heart and lung problems, and I am proud to work in one of only a handful of dedicated cardiac intensive care units in the country.”

“We have a real mix of staff from the unit, including the Matron, Nurses, Health Care Assistants, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists all taking up this opportunity to make a real difference for our patients.”

“We are raising money through Southampton Hospital Charity to walk the three peaks of Yorkshire on 24th June. That’s 25 miles in just 12 hours!”

“We need to raise money for much needed rehabilitation equipment to help our patients on the road to recovery. Our patients vary in age from 19 upwards,  and whilst most of our patients thankfully do not spend long with us we have some patient's staying for up to four months at a time.”

Colette Green, physiotherapist, quotes “The unit needs equipment as basic as chairs, plus mobilising equipment like high tech drip poles to support the intensive monitoring equipment to enable the patient to walk. Our long term patients who have been critically unwell and bed bound for a prolonged period of time become extremely weak and require extensive rehabilitation in order to get back to their normal lives. The resources available to us at present are limited so by raising money we hope to purchase a variety of different equipment in order to expand the range of treatments available and to improve our patients stay on the unit.'

Matron Rachel Spreadborough said “Teamwork in Intensive Care is vital to the care our patients receive.  Many different teams work together to rehabilitate seriously ill patients.  It is great that staff from all these teams are taking part in this walk: Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and myself.  Together, as we do at work, we are taking this opportunity to make a real difference for our patients.”

Lindsay Hawkins, comments “The staff on the unit thought, if we are working hard to get our patients walking again, then we can certainly don our walking boots and put our best foot forward for our own challenge!”
