Local businesses join forces to fight Cystic Fibrosis
Montagu’s Café Bar & Bistro in Whiteley Shopping Centre was the setting on Thursday 3 November for a unique food extravaganza held to raise much needed funds for the battle against Cystic Fibrosis (CF).
David and Fiona Williams from Montagu’s joined forces with Allan and Debbie Packer of Whiteley based telecommunications company Silver Lining to plan the event which raised £7,000 for both the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit at the Southampton General Hospital (for Southampton Hospital Charity).
Debbie Packer (29) who has CF endures between 3 and 8 hours of essential treatment every day just to try to prolong her life expectancy and to help treat the constant infections in her lungs. “I am delighted we were able to raise this amount as this will help the CF Trust with funding of research to find more effective treatments for CF and the Southampton Adult CF Unit with funding essential medical equipment and improving the quality of patients’ lives when they spend weeks to months each year in hospital isolation rooms.” said Debbie.
CF is the UK’s most common life-shortening inherited condition. The condition affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system. Sufferers usually look healthy; however, they are far from that. The lungs are constantly infected causing long term damage and as a result, their lungs become less and less capable of working effectively, therefore breathing is a real struggle. There is no cure and only half of those with CF can expect to reach their 40th birthday – many sufferers do not even reach the age of 20.
Guests were entertained by Cordelectra Electric String Duo at a champagne reception before enjoying seven sumptuous courses, specially created by Montagu’s Head Chef, Panpat Promchotchai, with wine to accompany.
David Williams explained why they wanted to hold this event. “We’ve known Debbie for a number of years and knew she was always in and out of hospital. Due to a tough year health-wise for Debbie, she decided not to hold her usual Cystic Fibrosis Autumn Ball as she needed to prioritise her health, so Fiona and I suggested that we hold an event at Montagu’s to support Debbie and the Cystic Fibrosis charities.”
“I was really touched that David and Fiona wanted to do this to support me and others with CF and to have the event at Montagu’s was so special. It has been a delight working with them and the Montagu’s team. Montagu’s is a very up-market chic bistro, which delivers fantastic high quality food and I just knew our guests would appreciate this,” said Debbie.
The event was sponsored by Insurancewith, Silver Lining Laboratories and Silver Lining Convergence Ltd. They were also supported by Whiteley PA Hire, Studio 22B Photography and many local companies donated items for the raffle and auction, including Boots, Clarins, Co-Op, Strands, Hair Ott, KSpa, The Concorde Club, The Solent Hotel Spa and Skylark Golf and Country Club. David and Fiona and Allan and Debbie are very grateful to all the support and sponsorship provided and also to their helpers on the evening Dee Cordall and Eliza Reynolds as well as the Montagu’s team and their VIP guests.
