Taking on Southampton for children’s ward
Richard Stapleton, from Lordswood, is raising money for the G3 children’s orthopaedic ward fund of Southampton Hospital Charity.
He comments: “My daughter Lydia, now 14, has spent so much of her life on the G3 ward that we really wanted to do something to show our appreciation.
Lydia was born with congenital dislocation of her hips. This meant that she has spent numerous months of her life in plaster and continues to have treatment to correct this condition.
When she was just a few months old, she was put in a hip spica. This is when they plaster from the hips down to her feet to allow the bones to reset. This was a really difficult time for me and my wife, Jane, however the staff on the ward made it bearable.
In total, Lydia has had 17 operations and she a daily injection for a growth deficiency. She has had her tendons lengthened several times, and most recently had her foot reshaped.
Throughout these times, either myself or Jane has always stayed with Lydia. We have had beds provided for us so we can be near her, and on the ward there is even a parent’s room. This has been a godsend as there has been a kitchen area and a free supply of tea and coffee!
Some of the toys and games in this area are a little worn, so I want my fundraising money to be used in the children’s room to provide new toys and games for the children (and siblings of children in hospital) so they can be used as a distraction and learning resources for them.
This is our way of saying thank you.
When Lydia was in hospital we had lots of questions about procedures and aftercare, and the consultants and nursing staff always had the time to answer them, and all importantly, without using jargon!
I have previously done the Great South Run before which is 10 miles, however this year have stepped it up a gear by signing up to the Southampton half marathon. I have just started training and I am confident that with such a worthy cause to run for, I will complete it.
I set myself a target of £300, and with just under a month to go, I have already passed it – now I want to see if I can double my target! If you wish to sponsor me as a way of saying thank you to any care you or a relative/friend have received in Southampton General Hospital or Princess Anne Hospital, you can do so at this link: https://www.justgiving.com/Rich-stapleton2/
Southampton Hospital Charity have been overwhelmed with the support of our patients and relatives in relation to the Southampton half marathon.
We have just under 60 runners taking on this challenge for various wards around both our hospitals - THANK YOU!
