Miss Hampshire running the city half-marathon
Larissa Hirst, 24, will be running the first ever Southampton half-marathon in April for the C3 Hamwic Ward at Southampton General Hospital. This ward is where 80% of chemotherapy patients receive their treatment for cancer.
Larissa says: “My boyfriend, Ian Palmer, aged just 26, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October this year.
Since his diagnosis, the hospital has been amazing with his care and recovery. He had surgery not even a week after diagnosis, and received his first, and fingers crossed last, chemotherapy treatment in early December 2014.
After this, we felt that the ward and the hospital deserved some recognition for the brilliant work they do which is why I am raising money for Southampton Hospital Charity.
He received amazing care throughout the toughest time in our lives.
Nobody ever expects to have cancer, especially aged just 26, but we hope we can raise awareness of the disease and help the people who helped us so much during Ian’s journey of diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and after care.
I am thrilled to announce that Ian is now in remission following a check up in February. I’m really hoping to use my position raise awareness of a disease that is surprisingly prevalent in the young and fit.”
Larissa was crowned Miss Southampton in 2014, and in March 2015, was also crowned Miss Hampshire. She is splitting her fundraising between Southampton Hospital Charity and Beauty with a Purpose.
Larissa comments: “Both myself and Ian are signed up to run the Southampton half-marathon. We've both never ran this far before, and I really want to prove that us girlies with crowns are more than just pretty faces!
Next on my challenge list is to trek the Isle of Wight for Southampton Hospital Charity.”
After already raising over £1,000, we hope that after reading their story you will sponsor Larissa and Ian here: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/misssouthampton
We also want to wish all our 48 half-marathon runners good luck over the coming month to get in the last minute training! This will be a fantastic event and we cannot wait!
This year, the half-marathon fully sold out two months before the event, so if you wish to register your interest for the 2016 half-marathon, please email Alanna.firstname.lastname@example.org
About the charities
Southampton Hospital Charity aims to enhance the world class facilities provided at Southampton General Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital. Donations allow the hospital to buy equipment, fund research and provide better facilities that would otherwise be unaffordable under the NHS. With your help, the charity funds projects large and small across all wards and departments to improve patient care.
We are the NHS at its best, and your support can make a real difference.
Beauty with a Purpose (BWAP) helps countless amounts of children around the world, and their local communities. From supplying water, to building houses, supplying books and holidays, BWAP is a truly unique charity that has even been acknowledged by the late Nelson Mandela at the 2011 Miss World finals in London.
